Abstract

646,932. Centrifugal fans. CUMMINGS, W. W. July 25,1947, No. 20117. Convention date, Sept. 20, 1938. [Class 110(i)] [Also in Groups X, XIII and XXXV] Air supplied by a blower 17 to the space to be conditioned is drawn through a duct 15 having means such as a fan 25 for compressing the air during its passage through the duct and forcing it over cooling pipes 28, the air then expanding to its original volume, the fan speed being controlled jointly by the temperature and humidity of the atmosphere in the space to be conditioned. The duct 15 is formed with an enlargement 18 in which is disposed the fan 25 driven by a motor 26 and which draws the air from the axial region of the duct 15 and forces it outwardly against the peripheral wall of the chamber 18 and over cooling pipes 28 which may be the expansion coils of a refrigerating machine. The coils 28 remove the heat of compression so that a portion of the water content of the air is precipitated and discharged through a drain pipe 40. The air then expands to its original volume under the influence of the blower 17 and passes over a heating coil 45 in a circuit cooling the condenser 30 of the refrigerating machine. The speed of the fan 25 is regulated by a thermostat T and a humidostat H in the space to be conditioned, and the fan circuit includes a solenoid 39 for closing the switch 34 of the refrigerator compressor 29. Water is circulated through the condenser 30 of the refrigerating machine and the heating coil 45 by a pump 46 controlled by a thermostat 49 in the duct 15. To maintain a circulation of water through the condenser 30 when the pump 46 is stopped the thermostat 49 closes the circuit of a motor 56 driving a pump 55, and opens a solenoid valve 54, to circulate water through the condenser 30, pipe 42, valve 54, pipe 52 and spray tower 50. The refrigerating system may be replaced by a simple water circulating system. The electric motor 26 may be replaced by a steam or compressed air turbine. In a modification a second series of fan blades are provided beyond those shown, with cooling coils both between the blades and outside the outer blades. For higher compressions the fan may comprise a series of centrifugal fans 72, Fig. 5, comprising discs 73 connected by radial blades 74 the cooling coils 75 being disposed between the impellers. The discs 73 are carried by a tube 69 connected by spiders 70 with the driving shaft 21 and running in annular bearings 65, 68.
