646,358. Radiolocation. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. July 18, 1945, No. 18478. Convention date, Oct. 20, 1943. [Class 40 (vii)] In a radiolocation system, employing a frequency - modulated transmission, the reflected signals from aerial 18 are combined in a modulator 17 with oscillations of the desired intermediate frequency produced by a local oscillator 21 and one or both side-bands are combined in a mixer 16 with energy from the transmitting oscillator 10 to give the intermediate frequency. These I.F. oscillations pass through an amplifier 24 to a detector 28 also fed by the source 21 to give a beat frequency corresponding to the change in frequency of the transmitter during the passage of the waves to the object and back. The output of detector 28 is thus a measure of the distance to the object and may give an audible note or operate an indicator 31. The speed of moving objects may similarly be determined, the transmitted waves in this case being of constant frequency and the output of detector 28 representing the change of frequency due to the Doppler effect.
