Abstract
646,313. Making battery plates; powder metallurgy. ACCUMULATOREN FABRIEK VARTA N. V. May 18, 1948, No. 13448. Convention date, May 17, 1947. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] In a method of making porous metal plates, more particularly for alkaline accumulators, in which powdered metal is sintered on to a grid and a reinforcing gauze, the grid 1 is larger than the finished plate, including the terminal lug and the gauze 2 is larger than the body of the plate, and after a light sintering, the metal powder 3 is pressed, lightly at the central portions and heavily where the powder is over the grid, after which the final sintering takes place and the plate is punched out to the desired shape. Before the final punching operation the plate may be impregnated with an active material such as nickel hydroxide for a positive plate or cadmium oxide hydrate for a negative plate. For a plate of copper powder on a grid of nickelplated iron the second sintering should preferably be at a lower temperature than the first in order to retain the maximum porosity. For plates of nickel powder, however, the second sintering should preferably be at a higher temperature. By using a multiple grid, a number of plates may be produced simultaneously.
