Abstract

645,841. Tube making machines. AMERICAN VISCOSE CORPORATION. July 3, 1947, No. 17596. Convention date, May 14, 1946. [Class 99(ii)] [Also in Groups VI and XVIII] Sausage skin is continuously formed and at the same time filled by helically winding strip material so that the edges overlap and are sealed. The sausages are later formed in links. The sealing may be by an adhesive or a solvent and by heat and/or pressure. The wrapping strip 9 is continuously drawn from a roll 10 by the friction pressure of an endless driven belt 13 with the first coil of strip around a mandrel 6 which is free to rotate on a mandrel 5 supplied with sausage meat &c. under pressure in a container 7. The endless belt 13 maintains its contact with the first few coils of the strip around the mandrel and then leaves the mandrel and leads on to a power driven roll 14 from which it passes down to another roll 15 thus being stretched between the two rolls 14 and 15. The edge of the wrapping strip 9 is supplied with sealing or solvent liquid in a container 18 by a wick 19. The sealing is finally effected by upper and lower pressure rolls 21 and heat may also be applied. In another embodiment (Fig. 4 not shown) the mandrel itself is rotated by a belt and no rotatable sleeve is provided and heat sealing is done by heating the belt by passing it between an electrically heated drum and a heated shroud; the strip may also be heated by passing through a heating tunnel.
