Abstract

645,632. Bolting. WILLIAMS, H. M. May 11, 1948, No. 12871. [Class 89(i)] [Also in Group XIX] In order to measure the stress on a member 2 of a roof truss 1 a bar 5 is inserted in a rivet or bolt hole 6 at a joint 3, the remaining bolts being slackened to allow the full load to come on the bar 5 the other end of which is stressed by a straining device 16 and dynamometer 7 both of known form. The bar 5 comprises a shoulder against which abuts a washer 10 of semicircular cross-section which together with a similar washer on the other side of the gusset plate 4 and member 2 allows of a limited angular movement of the bar 5 relative to the plane normal to the member and gusset plate. In a modification, Fig. 3. to measure the load on a bolt or rivet in double shear, a further reduced portion 21 is provided so that the first reduced portion 9 takes the load between members 2 and 4 as before. More than one bar and associated dynamometer may be used together. In the case of riveted joints the rivets must first be removed and replaced by bolts one at a time, after which the test may be carried out in the manner described.
