Abstract
645,511. Photo - - electric turbidometers. EVANS ELECTROSELENIUM, Ltd., and COLLINS, G. C. Sept. 22, 1948, No. 24791. [Class 40 (iii)] The cloudiness of suspensions in a liquid is measured by passing light axially upward through a test tube containing the liquid, the light being collimated by the convex bottom of the tube so that the presence of suspensions, e.g. bacterial growths, causes diffusion of light to photo-cells situated around the walls of the tube. As shown, the test tube 1, here shown dotted, is maintained vertical by a bush 14 and rests in a cup-shaped recess 4 in a plate 5. Light from a lamp 3 passes through a small aperture 7 in the bottom of the recess and is collimated by the convex bottom of the tube. The presence of suspensions diffuses some of this light to six photo-cells 8 situated around the base of the tube, all these cells being connected in parallel and their output indicated on a suitable meter (hidden). The quantity of light passing through the tube may be adjusted by means of a slidable apertured plate 11 adjustable by a screw 33 and a knob 13. The cells are held between a hexagonal boss 24 on the plate 5 and a larger boss 25 on an insulating ring 19 and spaced from the plate 5 by conducting bars 17. This causes the top of the photocells to incline away from the axis of the tube so as to avoid the danger of direct illumination. The photo-cells are urged towards the axis of the test tube by leaf-springs 26 which also serve to make contact with the backs of the photo-cells, the springs being screwed to the bars 17. These bars make contact with a conducting ring 20 situated between insulating ring 19 and a further insulating ring 18 by means of the screws by which bars 17 are attached to these rings. The supporting rings in turn depend from vertical bars 21 screwed to the instrument casing. Connections to the front of the cells are made by tags 28. A domed hinged cover 15 is provided to prevent light entering the top of the tube.
