[Class 124] A saw for cutting stone or like hard material has a longitudinal core of unvarying non-circular cross-section, twisted helically with reference to its axis, which carries with a snug fit a plurality of similar cutting tools, the angular setting of which varies with the twist of the core. As shown, a triangular core 1 is twisted helically along its length and has fitted on it a plurality of triangular cutters 2 which may be separated from each other by flexible distance pieces, e.g. springs 5. The angular disposition of the apices 3 of the cutters depends on the twist of the core. Other shapes of core, square or rectangular, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), or a three strand cable, Fig. 3 (not shown), are illustrated as well as other shapes of cutters. Owing to the twist in the core and the presence of flexible distance pieces any longitudinal movement of the cutters results also in a rotary movement of the cutters. The cutters may have cutting edges of hard material, e.g. tungsten carbide, or may have annular plates of hard material fixed to softer metal bases, the aperture in the plate being larger than that in the base.
