Abstract

Monovinyl-phenoxthines are heat-polymerised in bulk, solution, emulsion or suspension, alone or with catalysts, e.g. boron fluoride, boron fluoride etherate, stannic chloride, antimony pentachloride, organic or inorganic peroxides, e.g. benzoyl peroxide and tert.-butyl hydroperoxide, air, the halogens, oxygen, ozone and the halogen acids, light of short wavelength and activated carbon or copper. Inhibitors, e.g. catechol or hydroquinone may be present in the monomer. The products are thermoplastic with electric insulating properties and may include plasticizers, solvents, resins, and fillers, e.g. a -cellulose, mica dust, titanium oxides, talc, zinc oxide, magnesium oxide, asbestos, quartz, wood flour, cellulose or wool fibres. They may be cast, pressed, extruded, rolled, machined, and injection or pressure moulded, or formed into films. Solutions may be applied to paper or glass cloth to form dielectrics. In examples, 3-vinylphenoxthine is polymerized in benzene solution and the polymer precipitated by methyl alcohol.
