Abstract
644,517. Counting-apparatus. ABBETT, D. F. April 23, 1948, No. 11219. [Class 106 (i)) [Also in Group XV] In a scoring device for games, units and tens values of the same numerical value are selectively entered by a single actuator member having a pair of independently-actuable motionimparting elements each co-operating with a units or tens indicator, the elements being actuated by power impulses of different strengths. The device may be used to sum the score in darts, a dart-board (Fig. 6) being divided into scoring areas T<SP>1</SP> &c., each of which is moved back when struck by a dart to make contacts to feed pulses of current to a counting device (Fig. 5) through wires I.C.1-9. A current pulse due to a units value passes through a resistance and is thus weaker than the pulse due to a tens value. For scores where the tens value equals the units value, two contacts are provided, being made successively to give one pulse for the tens and another for the units. The counting device comprises a frame 18 carrying nine solenoids 1 fed with the current from the dartboard. Each solenoid carries two armatures 2, 3 entering the tens and units respectively through ratchets 12, 13 on axles 20, 19 driving indicator drums 23, 22. Carry-over devices 30, 31 are provided from the units drum 22 to the tens drum 23 and from the latter to a hundreds drum 24. The motion of the ratchets 12, 13 is proportional to the value to be entered. As shown in Fig. 4, the tens armature 2 and the units armature 3 are loaded by springs 6, 7 respectively, the former being stronger than the latter. A weak pulse representing a units value can thus operate the units armature only. A strong pulse operates the tens armature which in its motion throws a trip 14 in the way of armature 3 to prevent the entering of a units value. When used for darts scoring the solenoids for the values 7, 8 and 9 carry only a units armature. The dart board may be made in sectors secured together.
