Abstract

[Class 99(ii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] Seamed tubular members for use in the production of airtubes for tyres are formed by progressively folding, and joining by heat-sealing, the edges of a travelling strip of thermoplastic material which is periodically interrupted to leave unjoined portions at intervals where the material is severed to produce air-tube units. Figs. I and II show an apparatus for producing the tube units. The end of a continuous strip of thermoplastic material, such as plasticized polyvinyl chloride, is fed through a forming-device 3 comprising a sleeve 16 and core 4 in which the strip is folded into a double-loop section shown in Fig. V At the issuing end of the former, the neck-portion of the tube passes between a pair of roller electrodes 5 positioned in registering slots 14 and 17, 18 in the core and sheath. Timed breaks in the electric circuit provide for unsealed portions at pre-determined intervals along the tube. The double-tube is then slit along the neck-portion by a circular knife 6 to form two separate tubes which pass between feed-rolls 7 on to a table 8 for delivery on to a conveyer-band 10. The rolls 7 are power-driven and geared by belts 39, 41 to the shafts 20, 19 of the electrodes 5. Pivoted at 45 on the table 8 is a weighted arm 47 fitted with a knife 9, co-operating with an arcuate slot 42, 43 in the table, by which the unjoined portions of the tubes are transversely severed. The knife 9 is normally held in the raised position shown in Fig. 1, and is actuated by the plunder 48 of a solenoid 49. The latter is energized in timed relation with the cutout of the electrodes 5.
