Abstract

644,435. Catches. COMEY, C. S., and SAXTON, M. F. Sept. 18, 1947, No. 25487. Convention date, Sept. 19, 1946. [Class 44] A friction catch for cupboard and like doors has a dual pivot with associated springs of differing'strengths so that rotation about one pivot during closing requires less force than that required for rotation about the other pivot on opening the door. A swinging catch 36, Fig. 1, of box shape and bent from a single piece of metal, is pivoted on a pin 34 which is fixed near the upper end of a U-shaped yoke 28. The ends of a helical spring 40 mounted on the pin 34 react against the yoke and catch to urge the latter outwardly, the catch having a stop tongue 38, Fig. 7, formed at its lower end which cooperates with a pin 30 on the yoke. A one-piece sheet metal frame 10 housing the catch and secured to the door by screws passing through flanges 12 formed thereon has its top and bottom face plates 18 perforated at 20 to receive the pin 30, and its end face 14 provided with a latch aperture 16. The yoke 28 is normally maintained in its position, as in Fig 1. by a relatively strong compression spring 42 of arc form which abuts against lugs 32 and 26 formed on the yoke 28 and back plate 24 of the frame 10 respectively, or in a modification, Fig. 9, the lug 26 may be integral with the back plate 24<1>. On closing the door the strike surface 52, of a keeper member 44 secured to the jamb by corner prongs 50 and a single screw, contacts the cam face 46 of the catch 36, pivoting the latter about the pin 34 against the light resistance of spring 40, until the catch finally springs behind the keeper to retain the door closed. On pulling the door to open it, the yoke is forced to pivot about pin 30 against the action of the strong spring 42, as in Fig. 7, since the cam surface 48 is substantially radial to pin 34.
