644,381. Testing physical qualities of materials. GLOVER, C. W. May 16, 1947, No. 13295. [Class 106 (ii)] In a machine for testing beams by bending, the load is applied intermediately by one or more hydraulic rams 13 below the beam 9 which is supported at each end on transverse rollers 4. As shown, the rollers 4 are mounted between angles 5 fixed to I-beams 2 anchored to a ferro-concrete foundation 18 by bars 24. Holes 7 in the webs of the I-beams receive a bar 8 connected by links 11 to an I-beam 10 bearing on each end of the beam 9, thus determining the span of beam to be tested. A lever-operated hydraulic jack 1 transmits fluid pressure to the plunger (not shown), of the ram 13, which passes through a hole 15 in a cross-head 16 anchored to the foundation 18. The deflection is measured by a member 27, Fig. 4, on top of the beam 9, connected by a pivoted lever 28 to a rod 31 operating the pointer of a dial 25 through a rack and pinion. A block 22, Fig. 1, may be placed over the hole 15 to adapt the machine for making a compression test on a specimen 23.
