Abstract
643,679. Aerials. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. July 4, 1947, No. 17773. [Class 40 (vii)] A circular polarizer for linearly polarized incident radio waves comprises a mirror 2 in conjunction with a plurality of parallel conductive walls 1 arranged edge-on to said mirror. The spacing b is greater than half a wavelength and the dimension w/ 2 is such that during a passage to the mirror and back the component parallel to the walls undergoes a phaseshift of 90 degrees, or an odd multiple thereof, with respect to the perpendicular component. This incident energy linearly polarized at 45 degrees to the walls will emerge circularly polarized. The Specification shows that by suitable choice of the dimensions band w/ 2 , with respect to the wavelength of the radio energy, impedance mismatch on incidence upon and emergence from the mirror structure is avoided, and the system is suitable for wide band operation. Preferably the mirror is paraboloidal and the conductive walls are fixed mechanically and electrically thereto. Strengthening partition plates may be provided at right angles to the conductive walls but their spacing must be greater than that of the walls themselves. The ducts formed between the walls may be filled with low-loss dielectric.
