Abstract

643,649. Making boxes. BERGSTEIN, S. April 26, 1946, No. 12711. [Class 18] Boxes of the kind described in Specification 524,924 have handles 14 attached to the main panels 1, 5 by adhesive. The handles meet over the top walls 3, 7 of the box and are locked together by bending their cut-out portions 14c to one side. The boxes are formed on machines substantially as described in the above Specification but having devices for applying the handle blanks. In one embodiment, the handle blanks 14 are fed in on both sides of the box blank conveyer 18 by two feeding and glue applying devices pivoted at 31 and periodically raised clear of the box blanks by cams 34 and followers 33. In each device, a feed wheel 36 takes handle blanks singly from a hopper 35 passes them to conveyer belts 37, 41 for gluing by a roller 46 and delivery to a platform 47 below the path of the box blanks. Pressure wheels 48, 49 force the handle and box blanks together and the joined blanks may be passed, as shown, through rollers 50, 51 to ensure adhesion or may go direct to a folding mechanism 25 where sweeps 26 turn over the flaps 3, 7 and the free portions of the handles to lie flat on the main panels 1, 5. The completed collapsed box is passed out to a stacking conveyer 28. An alternative device for feeding handle blanks comprises, on each side of the box blank conveyer, a hopper 73 from which the blanks 14 are fed to a further hopper 81, Figs. 8, 9. From the hopper 81 the blanks are fed by a conveyer 82 past a glue roller 89 to a platform 91. The platform 91 and a member 115 are forced towards each other by toggle mechanisms to press the blanks 14 against the underside of the box blanks. The box blanks' motion is halted during the period in which handle blanks are being attached by dividing the box blank conveyer just before the handle attaching mechanism. This conveyer thus comprises two separate chains 101, 104, moving at the same speed but having blank engaging lugs at different intervals. The box blank is carried by the chain 101 to the handle applying position and is halted until engaged by a lug on the chain 104.
