Abstract

643,267. Vehicle suspensions. OSTER, L. E. W. MONTROSE- and POLLOPAS PATENTS, Ltd. Oct. 8, 1945, No. 26129. Convention date, Dec. 29, 1943. [Class 108(ii)] In a vehicle with four effective suspension points and having a self-stabilizing resilient conjugate suspension system, self-stability is obtained by a stabilizing couple produced as a function of a movement about the transverse axis, the system comprising two lateral conjugate suspension arrangements which are independent of one another and in which the interconnection between two conjugated wheels on the same side of the chassis acts both as a conjugating element and a resilient member. Such interconnecting member may be a single torsion bar, devices for producing the stabilizing couple being located at each end thereof, or two torsion bars in series, a stabilizing device being located between the two bars. In Fig. 1 the interconnection between the front and rear wheel is a single torsion bar 12, rotatably mounted in brackets 13 and 15. The front wheel is carried by upper and lower links 3, 6, the lower link 6 being connected to the end of the torsion bar by levers 8, 11 which are so disposed angularly that the restoring couple increases rapidly with a steadily increasing wheel deflection, whereby the system is made self-stabilizing. The rear wheel is connected by link 17 and arm 16 with the other end of the torsion bar to produce a similar result. In the modification shown in Figs. 5 and 6 a pair of torsion bars 25, 30 is connected in series, the outer ends of the torsion bars being rigid with the wheel-carrying members 24, 32 and the inner ends being connected by a link 28, Fig. 7, pivoted to arms 27 and 29 rigid with the torsion bars, the link and arms being so disposed angularly to make the system self-stabilizing as above. In a further modification, Figs. 9 and 10, the front wheel is carried by arms 43, 44, the latter being fixed to one end of the torsion bar 45, the rear wheel is carried by a cantilever leaf spring 49 pivoted to the frame at 50, and connected to the torsion bar by arm 47 and link 48 so as to make the system self-stabilizing as above. Specification 643,266 is referred to.
