[Class 9 (i)] [Also in Group XL (c)] An artificial echo in a radar system is produced by a responding receiver-transmitter apparatus (see Group XL (c)) which produces a delayed repeated signal. The artificial echo, delayed a predetermined time behind the true echo, may be used to identify a body in flight which is carrying the apparatus, or it may be used to provide the echo from a body such as a projectile which is not large enough to produce a true echo of adequate strength. If it is desired to compare the ranges of a projectile and its target and transmit a detonating signal a predetermined time before range coincidence, the echo signal may be delayed by the required time interval and the signal transmitted when apparent range coincidence occurs.
