Abstract

Acyl polyalkylene-polyamine biguanides of the general formula RCONH-(CHR1-CHR11 -NH)X-C(: NH)-NH-C(: NH)-Y, wherein R represents the residue of a fatty acid (preferably containing at least 9 carbon atoms), R1 and R11 represent hydrogen or methyl, a is 2, 3 or 4, Y represents -NH2 or <FORM:0642989/IV (b)/1> X represents halogen or -OSO3-lower alkyl, and the expression "lower alkyl" denotes an alkyl group containing not more than 5 carbon atoms, are manufactured by condensing a fatty acid or an ester (including glycerides) thereof with a 1 : 2-polyalkylene-polyamine, reacting the resulting acyl-1 : 2-polyalkylene-polyamine, or a salt (e.g. hydrochloride, sulphate or phosphate) thereof, with dicyandiamide, and, if desired, treating the product with an alkyl halide or dialkyl sulphate in which the alkyl group contains not more than 5 carbon atoms. The products are useful for the treatment of textiles (see Group IV (c)). In examples: (1) stearic acid is heated with diethylene-triamine and the product is dissolved in dilute hydrochloric acid and refluxed with dicyandiamide in methanol; (2) the product of (1), but prepared somewhat differently, is treated with dimethyl sulphate. Additional starting materials specified are: fatty acids-lauric, palmitic, oleic, ricinoleic, acetic, propionic and butyric; polyalkylene-polyamines-triethylenetetramine and 1 : 2 - dipropylene - triamine; alkylating agents-methyl chloride, ethyl iodide and diethyl sulphate. U.S.A. Specification 1,947,951 is referred to.ALSO:Acyl polyalkylene-polyamine biguanides of the general formula <FORM:0642989/IV (c)/1> (wherein R represents the residue of a fatty acid, R1 and R11 represent hydrogen or methyl, x is 2, 3 or 4, Y represents -NH2 or <FORM:0642989/IV (c)/2> lower alkyl, and the expression "lower alkyl" denotes an alkyl group containing not more than 5 carbon atoms) may be applied to textile fibres (e.g. viscose rayon, cellulose acetate and especially fibres of vegetable origin such as cotton) as dye-fixing agents, or, in the case of compounds in which the radical represented by R in the general formula contains at least 9 carbon atoms, for imparting a soft handle or feel to the material. In examples, dyed or undyed cotton cloth is padded with a 0.25-2.0 per cent aqueous dispersion of stearyl diethylene-triamine biguanide (using the polyglycol ether of octylphenol as dispersing agent), or with an aqueous solution of the methosulphate of the said biguanide derivative.
