Abstract

642,850. Accelerometers. MINISTER OF SUPPLY. May 28, 1948, No. 14469. [Class 106 (iii)] A peak accelerometer comprises a plurality of individual accelerometers designed to operate at different accelerations respectively, each individual acclerometer comprising a mass (17 ... 26) and one or more restraining wires or strips (27 ... 36) tensioned almost to breaking point and holding the mass directly or indirectly against the body of the instrument in the direction in which acceleration is to be measured, the arrangement being such that fracture of one or more of the restraining wires or strips will provide an indication of the peak acceleration to which the instrument has been subjected. The masses 17... 26 which are graded in size to measure, e.g., accelerations from 5g to 50g, in steps of 5g, are supported on guide-rods 13, 14 in a casing 39 which may have a graduated slot for observing the condition of the instrument. Clamping means 37 is provided to relieve the strain on the wires 27 ... 36 when the instrument is not in use, and a threaded stem 16 is for securing the instrument to a mounting.
