Abstract

642,700. Rail - guided traction systems. BROCKHOUSE & CO., Ltd., J. June 15, 1948, No. 16053. [Class 104 (ii)] Rail joints.-In a trackway of the kind provided with a central guide rail arranged to be engaged, on each of its lateral sides, by guide means on a vehicle which has road-wheels running directly upon the track at each side of the guide rail, a longitudinal groove 16 is provided in the underside of each guide rail 13 and the abutting ends of a pair of such rails are joined by providing at the extremity of one of them a support 17a with a vertical web 18 which engages in the grooves 16 of both rails, and providing near the extremity of the adjacent rail a support 17b with a web 18 extending only into the groove 16 of that rail, the support also having a pair of longitudinallyextending fish-plates 24 which are welded on opposite sides of the web and receive between them the web of the adjacent rail end. The webs 18 of the supports 17a, 17b are welded to their respective rails along the edges of the grooves 16. The longitudinal dimensions of the rail supports and their spacing along the guide rails may be as described in Specification 642,699 to provide beneath the rails a space to allow the passage of drifting snow &c. The flanges 20 of the supports are secured to the track 10 (not shown) by spikes or other means.
