Abstract
An emulsion paint is produced by forming a suspension of a finely divided pigment in an aqueous medium containing a naturally occurring organic protective colloid and dispersing an air-drying oil vehicle (e.g. an oil-modified alkyd or phenol-formaldehyde resin) therein by an emulsifying agent. The amount of pigment is from one quarter to twice the weight of vehicle, the amount of aqueous phase at least sufficient for a stable oil-in-water emulsion, the amount of said protective colloid from one-fifth to one-twelfth the weight of the vehicle and also from 5 to 15 per cent by weight of the combined amount of pigment and vehicle and the viscosity of the vehicle is adjusted, if necessary, to make it dispersible in the aqueous suspension. Cation-active emulsifying agents are used, and additional protective colloids such as the alginates or methyl cellulose may be incorporated, as may also be a preservative and an anti-foaming agent. Pigments specified are titanium oxide, lithopone and fine oxide. Calsin is the protective colloid and cobalt and lead naphthenates are included in the paints. Specifications 414,689, [Group II], 555,094, [Group III], and 640,502 are referred to.ALSO:An emulsion paint is produced by forming a suspension of a finely divided pigment in an aqueous medium containing a naturally occurring organic protective colloid and dispersing an air drying oil vehicle in said suspension by an emulsifying agent, the amount of pigment being from one-quarter to twice the weight of the vehicle, the amount of aqueous phase being at least sufficient to produce a stable oil in water emulsion, the amount of said protective colloid being from one-fifth to one-twelfth the weight of the vehicle and also being from 5 to 15 per cent by weight of the combined amount of pigment and vehicle and the viscosity of the vehicle being adjusted, if necessary, to a value such that it is dispersible in the aqueous suspension.
