Abstract

642,048. Educational appliances. PICK, A., and SPEAR & SONS, Ltd., J. W. March 17, 1948, No. 7955. [Class 146 (ii)] A question and answer device of the type comprising two movable electric terminals adapted to be connected to a source of electrical energy, a series of conductors to be contacted by the movable terminals to complete the electric circuit when any one conductor is contacted by both terminals and so operate an audible or visible device and a series of sheets bearing questions and answers with holes associated with each through which the terminals make contact with the conductors, the holes being arranged so that the circuit is completed when the two holes used by the terminals are associated with a question and its correct answer, characterised in that the conductors are arranged over a surface, each traversing a substantial area of the surface and each can be contacted not only at its ends but at a plurality of points intermediately to provide a plurality of alternative positions for the answers or the questions and answers served by each conductor. A box e provided with a space f for the conductors over which is placed one of the series of sheets bearing questions and answers and with a battery g, one pole g<SP>1</SP> being connected by a flexible lead to a pin h the other pole g<SP>2</SP> being connected to an electric light bulb j<SP>1</SP> and by a flexible lead j3 to a pin k. The conductors are formed by strips of metal foil b stuck metal side upwards to a board a which has aligning pins d for the question and answer sheets. The strips bare arranged in a series of parallel and right angled lines in the form of a maze, each strip such as b2 starting from the outside and ending at the centre of the board a and separated from adjacent strips b by spaces b<SP>1</SP>. The conductors may be masked by a card c having a number of regularly arranged holes c<SP>1</SP> each of which is in register with one of the conductors b, and giving a plurality of positions through which any one of the conductors can be contacted. The sheets bearing questions and answers are preferably arranged with the questions on the outer edge of the sheet and the answers to the questions at any one position can be varied from sheet to sheet. For questions requiring two answers, the two answers are placed in different positions associated with the same conductor as the question. According to the Provisional Specification the strips of foil may cross each other, suitable insulation being provided at such cross-over points.
