Abstract
641,864. Lubricating. NEVILLE, S., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. July 5, 1948, No. 18032. [Class 12 (iii)] In a bearing arrange ment for a vertical shafi 1 of a heavy rotor machine having a thrust bearing 4 and guide bearings 12, 13 an oil reservoir casing 5 surrounds the thrust bearing 4 and is sub divided into an inner compartment 10 and a radially outer compart. ment 9 by a vertica wall 8 which allows surplus oil from the compartment 10 tc overflow into the com. partment 9 from where it is gravity-fed througt pipes 16, 17 to the guide bearings 12, 13. The supply to compartment 10 is through a pipe 14 in the base of the compartment, and an outlet 15 is provided in the wall of the outer compartment 9. The supply through pipes 16, 17 to annular recesses 21 at the tops of the bearings 12, 13 may be controlled by valves 19, 20. Draining outlets are provided at the bases of the guide bearing housings. In a modification, a lower web of an extended portion of the reservoir casing is integrally connected with a guide bearing housing, and the oil supply pipe to this guide bearing is disposed within the casing between the web and base of the oil reservoir.
