Abstract
641,375. De-airing plastic material. JOHNSON, J. A. Dec. 6, 1947, No. 32248. Convention date, Aug. 3, 1940. [Class 86] The gas content of plastic material is reduced while an elongated tubular column of the material is travelling lengthwise along the inner surface of an elongated tube to which rotary movement is imparted. As shown, plastic material is discharged from a pug mill 50 and passes through an inlet 27 of a vacuum tight casing 11 into a tube 17 which is mounted for rotation by a motor 91, sprockets 90, 93, and chain 94 about an eccentric axis. The input end of the tube 17 receives a tubular inlet extension 20 which carries a helical thread on its outer surface, which in combination with the eccentric rotation of the tube 17 maintains a clearance for passage of gas from the tube whilst preventing egress of plastic material. Within the tube 17 and disposed at an angle to its axis of rotation is a fixed feed screw 34 comprising angled blades 36, which urge the plastic material along the tube whilst the centrifugal force of rotation holds the material in contact with the wall of the tube, thus providing kneading, pressure and a relatively large exposed surface area for removal of the gas. Gas is drawn off by means of the pump 60. The discharge end of the tube 17 has a helical thread upon its outer surface which enters, with radial clearance, the end of a fixed tube 21, and carries a feed screw 42 which lies within the tube 21 at an angle and eccentric to the axis of rotation of the tube 17. Plastic material rotating with the tube 17 enters the tube 21 and is progressed therethrough by the action of the feed screw 42, whilst gradually losing its rotation. The angular displacement and eccentricity of the feed screw with respect to the axis of rotation maintains a central clearance for the removal of gas. The plastic material is expelled through a die 56. Tubular lining screens may be provided within the tubes to prevent material being forced backwards up the tubes.
