Abstract

641,110. Educational appliances ; toys ; magnetic games. JACKMAN, S. C., and HACKETT, C. F. Nov. 8, 1947, No. 29803. [Classes 132 (ii), 132 (iii) and 146 (ii)] Apparatus for demonstrating the principles of road safety comprises a stand of table form on which are placed units representing footways, road junctions, &c., electrically illuminated traffic signals for disposal on the table top and switch means on the table for controlling the signals, a number of models of vehicles, pedestrians &c., for placing on the table, made of or incorporating a magnetic material and at least one magnet for moving the models. The stand comprises three walls 2. 3, 4 hinged together as at 7 and having pegs 9 or an inner rib 8 which fit into a rigid three-sided frame 12, the table top 17 of non-magnetic material fitting removably into a groove 16 in the frame 12, to allow different tops 17 to be inserted having different markings such as crossing guides 18, halt marks 19 and curb lines 20. Each wall 2, 3 or 4 comprises a frame 6 which is of hollow form to conceal electrical leads and a panel 22 bearing representations 23 of road signs behind each of which is mounted a lamp 27, the lamps being so connected that the same sign on all three sides is illuminated by one switch. The traffic signals 52 are mounted on a pedestal 46 on a unit 47 fitting onto the top 17, the leads from the lamps 53 being grouped in a cable 48 to a plug 49 fitting into one of the sockets 50 provided in the frame 12. The traffic lamps 53 are covered by translucent material in red, amber and green and pedestrian crossing indicators 56 are provided having a masking disc marked " cross now." The electrical leads from the sockets 50 pass in a groove in the frame 12 to a socket which co-operates with a plug mounted in the rib on the frame 6 of the wall 4 from which plug the individual wires pass into the hollow portion of the frame 6 to control switches in a panel let into the frame. The wiring is arranged so that the signals light up in the conventional order. Current may be supplied from a battery housed in one of the side walls or connection may be made to a mains supply. Vehicles 32, motor cycles 37 and pedestrians 39 may be made of magnetic material or as shown, the vehicles 32 of non-magnetic material may have a magnetised bar 34 resiliently mounted underneath as by rubber bands 36. A horseshoe magnet 33 is moved by hand underneath the table top 17 and the resilient suspension of the bar 34 gives retarded action to the body 32, simulating acceleration or delayed stopping.
