Abstract
640,345. Electric welding. POWER & SONS (BOX STRAPPING), Ltd., F. A. Nov. 26, 1945, No. 31921. [Class 83 (iv)] [Also in Groups I and XVII] In a bundling-machine (see Groups I and XVII), the ends of the strip are joined by a connecting device 18 comprising two horizontal welding arms 51a, 51b having electrodes 52a, 52b at the forward ends, and carried on cradles 58a, 58b. The electrodes are supplied with current by flexible conductors, through the welding arms, one of which is insulated from the machine frame, and incorporated in the circuit are a transformer to supply the current, and rotary switching discs having conducting strips around part of the periphery to control the current. The circuit is completed by an insulated plate 53 secured to the table 1 and with which the electrodes co-operate. The arms are retracted out of the binding plane during part of the cycle of operations by means of a lever operated by a rock-shaft actuated by a cam on the main cam-shaft of the machine. The arms are moved vertically into welding position by spring-cushioned telescopic pushrods 59a, 59b actuated through a lever by a cam on a shaft parallel to and chain-driven by the main cam-shaft.
