Abstract
663,551. Electric welding. TORONTO STAR, Ltd. Oct. 20, 1948, No. 27307/48. Class 83 (iv). [Also in Groups I and XVII] A wire binding machine comprises a reciprocating ram arranged above a bed-plate, means for feeding wire under an object placed on the bed-plate, the length of the wire being controlled by means operated by movement of the ram into engagement with the object, means for folding the wire around the object, means for tensioning the wire around the object and means for welding the ends of the wire together while it is held by the tensioning means. The welding-electrodes are mounted on and insulated from the ram 7 and extend through a slot 110 between the grippers. The lower electrode 109, Fig. 9, is pivoted to the ram and underlies the wire ends. The upper electrode 113, Fig. 6, is spring-loaded and is also pivoted to the ram; and it is moved into contact with the wires by a compressed-airoperated piston 121. Movement of this electrode allows a switch 124 to make to supply current to a welding transformer 112. The duration of the welding current is controlled by a bellows arrangement 128<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 5 (not shown). The welding-jaws are shaped so that the strain on the weld is in shear. After the wires have been welded the projecting wire ends are knocked down by an obliquely-mounted compressed-air-operated piston 127 which is fixed on the ram 7 between the two grippers.
