Abstract

639,711. Electric discharge tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Jan. 16, 1945, No. 1272. [Class 39 (i)] An electron discharge device substantially completely enclosed in a metallic conducting screen has lead-out conductors for the electrodes to each of which lead-out conductors-is secured a corresponding soldering tag. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the vacuum tube 1 has a glass envelope and is enclosed in a closefitting cylindrical metal can or shield 2, the bottom of which is closed by a metal plate 3 carrying a metal boss 4 and having holes 6 adapted to clear the rigid pin or flexible wire terminals 7 for the electrodes. Tags 9 formed from bent metal strip are welded or soldered to the terminals 7 and to the circuit wires and are held in position between a ring 8 and a starshaped piece 10 of insulating material such as phenol fibre by spinning over the end of the can 2. The can 2 is held in position in an apertured' metal chassis plate 12 between springy bosses 11 and the projecting rim 13. The can 2 may also be provided with a ridge or boss 14, Fig. 4, arranged parallel to the axis of the vacuum tube which can engage in a slot in the aperture in the plate 12. The boss 4 may be provided with an extension for use as a finger grip in inserting the vacuum tube.into the plate 12. In a modified construction for use with rigid pin electrode terminals the insulating discs 8 and 10 are omitted, the can 2 being spun over the plate 3, and the tags 9 are replaced by tags 15, Figs. 5 and 7, made from flat L-shaped pieces of metal rolled over at 16 to take the projecting end of the pin electrode terminal to which it is welded or soldered and having a hole 17 to which the circuit wire can be soldered. In the case of a tube already provided with a practically totally enclosing metal screen and having pin or rod terminals projecting beyond the closing metal base-plate, a holder having suitable contact springs or sockets can be used for receiving the tube. Each of the pin or rod terminals is soldered or welded to the corresponding contact spring or into the corresponding socket of the holder,
