Abstract

A resinous composition comprises a polymer made by polymerizing a monomeric material comprising predominantly a chloroethylene having one or two chlorine atoms on one only of the carbon atoms, from 150 to 350, preferably 200-300, parts by weight of a plasticizer therefor, and from 10-75, preferably 20-50, parts by weight of a lead salt of an organic carboxylic acid per 100 parts by weight of polymer. The monomeric material may be vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, mixtures of vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride, or mixtures of one or both of these with smaller amounts of another monomer such as vinyl bromide, vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate, vinyl butyrate, vinyl chloroacetate, vinylidene bromide, vinylidene chlorofluoride, dimethyl fumarate, dimethyl maleate, diethyl maleate, dibutyl maleate, diethyl chloromaleate, methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate and methyl ethacrylate. The plasticizer may be tricresyl phosphate, dibutyl phthalate, butyl phthalyl butyl glycollate, di-2-ethyl hexyl phthalate, dibutyl sebacate, undecyl tetrahydronaphthyl ketone, a chlorinated or nitrated aromatic compound, an aromatic or long-chain aliphatic ester, ether or ketone, or an ester of an inorganic acid. The lead salt, which is preferably a salt of a long-chain fatty acid containing from 10 to 20 carbon atoms, may be lead acetate, benzoate, citrate, oxalate, laurate, linoleate, palmitate or stearate. Pigments, fillers and dyes may be incorporated. The composition is particularly suitable for making moulds in which plaster can be cast.
