Abstract

639,437. Levels. WHITTICASE, C. S. Feb. 25, 1948, No. 5554. [Class 97 (ii)] A levelling stock 10, Fig. 2, is provided with one or more spirit bubble units 13, each unit comprising a spirit bubble tube 19 supported in a carrier 20 of substantially frusto-conical configuration which is adapted to be received in an aperture 15, Fig. 3, in the stock and retained therein by the frictional engagement between the outer tapered surface of the carrier and the surface of the aperture. Preferably the stock comprises a cast metal frame having one or more integrally formed housings 14 for the reception of the spirit bubble units 13, the frame being provided with side edges 18 so as to protect the bubble units. Scale markings 21, 23 may be provided on the housings 14 which co-operate with reference marks 22 on the carriers 20 so that one or more of the spirit bubble tubes 19 may be set at any desired angle to the stock. An embodiment wherein one such bubble unit is provided in a casting having a base machined to provide a true flat surface is also described.
