639,423. Storing drill rods. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. Sent. 29 1947 No. 26317. Convention date, Jan. 9. [Class 85] In a well derrick A the means for racking stands of pipe comprise a fingerboard D which consists of a girder secured to the derrick, the girder having projecting from it at right angles a plurality of posts 12 so defining a number of apertures into each of which is placed a stand of pipe whilst above the finger-board D are a number of racking fingers E, each having a plurality of aperture-defining posts. The fingers E are each pivotally secured at one end to the derrick so that they can easily be turned down from a vertical storage position to a horizontal position parallel with the fingerboard D so that each finger may receive a separate row of stands of pipe. Pivotally secured to each post is a spring-biassed member 14 which comes into contact with the stand as it enters the aperture, and which positively locks the stand in the aperture as a further stand g<SP>1</SP> enters an adjacent aperture. The last member is secured by a pin to hold its stand within the aperture. In a modified form, a portion of each of the members 14 passes through a slot in the beam supporting the posts and can be locked there by a spring catch secured on a rod capable of being slid to and fro within the beam since one end of the rod is threaded and is engaged by a rotating nut mounted at one end of the beam.
