Abstract

In the preparation of a vulcanized rubber composition containing a filler that normally increases the time required for vulcanization, such as carbon black, china clay, colloidal silica, colloidal alumina and certain varieties of bentonite, a primary or secondary amine is fixed on the filler by adsorption so as to be present in the mixture during vulcanization, preferred amines being monobutylamine, dibutylamine, piperidine, aniline, ortho-toluidine, para-toluidine and alphanaphthylamine. The adsorption may be effected by dissolving or emulsifying the amine in a suitable liquid and suspending the fillers to be treated in this solution or emulsion or by passing over the filler a gaseous stream containing a proportion of the vapour of the amine selected. Vulcanization may be effected in the presence of an accelerator having an acid character such as mercaptobenzothiazole.
