Abstract

638,004. Valve circuits. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. Jan. 13, 1947, No. 1097. Convention date, Oct. 27, 1943. [Classes 40 (v) and 40 (vi)] In a U.H.F. mixing circuit tunable over a large frequency range an improved signal/noise ratio is obtained by applying one of the signals to be mixed in phase and the other in push-pull through a Lecher system to a pair of valves. In addition the Lecher system is arranged so that the push-pull circuit is tuned to the frequency of the input in push-pull and the circuit comprised by the parallel connection of both halves of the push-pull circuit together with the input impedances of the valves and input circuits is tuned to the frequency of the signal applied in phase. The Figure shows a mixer circuit for a superheterodyne receiver which is self oscillatory at the local oscillator frequency. A signal from a dipole aerial D<1>, D<11> is applied via a Lecher wire system L<1>1, L<11>1 which is tuned to the frequency of the incoming signals by a shorting bridge K, the lines being correctly terminated by resistors R2, R3. The resonant circuit comprised by inductors L<1>3, L<11>3 and capacitors C<1>2, C"2, is tuned to the I.F. frequency, the inductors L<1>2, L"2, being H.F. chokes. Inductor L2 produces positive feedback at the resonant frequency of the in-phase circuit so that the circuit is oscillatory at this frequency and an external local oscillator is unnecessary. Simultaneous tuning of both the push-pull and in-phase circuits by adjustment of the bridge K is achieved when the I.F. frequency is low, by making the product of the surge resistance and terminal capacity of the two Lecher lines with respect to each other sub-À stantially equal to the product of the same two constants of the two lines jointly with respect to earth. Thus when the terminal capacities consist almost exclusively of the valve input capacities as in the Figure, the surge resistance of the two lines with respect to each other should be four times as high as their joint surge resistance with respect to earth. This latter constant may be adjusted as shown in the Figure by varying the distance between the Lecher system and an earthed metal plate. Specification 632,658 is referred to.
