Abstract

637,881. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. UDYLITE CORPORATION. Aug. 7, 1947, No. 21531. Convention date, Feb. 17, 1943. [Class 42 (i)] Thermoplastic material is joined by holding surfaces to be welded adjacent each other at an angle and progressively bringing them together face to face so as to move the angled portion along a line of junction, and directing a stream of hot gas into the angle so as to soften adjacent areas of said surfaces in the angle and to form therein a bead of molten thermoplastic material which is maintained in the angle by moving the stream of hot gas along the line of junction at a rate equal to that at which the surfaces are brought together. The speed of weld and temperature of the gas are controlled so that the molten bead is maintained without charing of the material. As shown, the edges 10, 11 of two sheets 2, 1 are welded together by a jet of hot gas from a nozzle 3 ; molten material may be added to the weld by using a weld rod against the end of which the jet is directed. Alternatively, a separate strip of the same or a different thermoplastic material may be welded so as to overlie the abutting edges of two sheets. The welded surfaces may be pressed together by external pressure. The thermoplastic material may be a polymerized vinyl compound.
