637,809. Making compound bearings. GLACIER METAL CO., Ltd., TAIT, W. H., and LOVE, P. P. April 23, 1947, Nos. 10851 and 19116. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Angular bending; curving.-In making bearings and like cylindrical objects from steel-backed white-metal, bronze, &c. strip, the strip edges are deflected and set by rolls towards the axis of bending to counter anticlastic curvature produced in the bending rolls, arranged normal to the strip length and parallel to the bending axis, so that after the leading, irregularly-curved part of the strip is discarded part-cylindrical elements of constant curvature and plane section successively may be cut from the strip. The strip 1, Fig. 5, is fed from a coil 2 through setting rolls 5A, 6A, 7A, which downwardly deflect the strip edges, and under a back-tension roll 8 to the bending rolls 9, 10, the line joining their axes being inclined to the normal to the strip 1 to produce a constant curvature, that is adjusted by screw-shifting the plate 15 carrying the rolls 9, 10 about an axis 17. To produce liners of equal length the rolls are automatically stopped when the strip end contacts a stop 12 electrically controlling hydraulically-operated and fixed abutments which grip the strip 1 for radial severing by a reciprocating cutter 11, the severed element falling free and re-starting the rolls. The setting rolls 6A, 6B, Fig. 9, comprise oppositely tapered flanges 61, 62 axially adjustable for differing strip widths and changeable for different deflections dependent on curvature, the pass being variable to suit the strip thickness. In a modification the bending rolls 8, 9, 10 may be three roll, offset abutment or draw through types, Figs. 1-3, not shown, and the bending and setting rolls may be combined. In a further modification a continuous feed and a flying shear are employed and a multi-edged cutter operating in both directions may be used. In another modification the strip may be sized and small irregularities and any residual anticlastic curvature be removed by nipping between the final bending rolls. If the strip is trimmed to close tolerance, punched, marked, &c. no further treatment is needed after bending.
