Abstract

Unsaturated polyesters prepared from dihydric alcohols and dibasic acids, either or both being unsaturated, are copolymerized with allyl or substituted allyl compounds in the presence of a tertiary alkyl hydroperoxide such as tertiary butyl or tertiary amyl hydroperoxides, an organic reducing agent having an amino or hydroxy group and copper or brass. Diallyl phthalate, diethylene maleate and diethylene maleate phthalate are specified as polymerizable materials. As reducing agents di-(tert.-amyl) hydroquinone, paramethylamino phenol, pyrogallol, glycine, paraphenylene diamine, 2:4-diaminophenol, hydroquinone, 2:5-di - (tert. - butyl) hydroquinone, 2 : 5 - di - (tert.-butyl) 1 : 4-benzoquinone or 2 : 5-di-(tert.-amyl) 1 : 4-benzoquinone may be used. The tert.-amyl or butyl hydroperoxides may be dissolved in the corresponding tert.-alcohol. Specification 586,397 is referred to.
