Abstract

637,443. Magazine gramophones. PHILCO CORPORATION. Jan. 13, 1947, No. 1104. Convention date, Jan. 12, 1946. [Class 40 (ii)] In a magazine gramophone, the horizontal movements of the pickup arm are controlled by a reciprocating cam structure, which forms part of a mechanism constructed' as a unit for the purpose of facilitating replacement &c. The vertical and horizontal movements of the pick-up arm 14 are effected by means of a cam-wheel 39 which is driven during an automatic cycle by the toothed part 28 of the turntable sleeve 38, via an intermediate stub combination-wheel 40, 42, the upper part 40 of which has a movable segment 47 which is normally held back against the tension of a spring 49a by a detent 48 until released by a solenoid-operated plunger 106. The circuit through the solenoid 104 is completed during normal automatic operation by means of a switch 107. During the playing of a record a finger 109 on an arm 110 attached to the pick-up arm shaft trails over the switchblade 108 which is depressed by the finger 109 when the pick-up arm reverses its direction of travel as it enters the final eccentric groove of the record. The solenoid circuit may also be completed by a manually-operated switch S when it is desired to reject a record. When it is desired to operate the gramophone manually, i.e. non-automatically, the switch S is made to break the circuit to the solenoid 104. When rotation of the camwheel 39 has been initiated, it completes one revolution, during which the pick-up arm is lifted by a lever 50 under the control of a cam-surface 55 on the underside of the camwheel 39. At the same time, the horizontal movements of the pick-up arm are controlled by an arm 22, Figs. 1 and 2, having a pin 22a which engages the cam-surfaces 71, 72, 73, 74, 78 and 75, Fig. 6, on a plate 57, which is made to slide backwards and forwards on rods 66, Fig. 1, under the control of a link 20, Fig. 2, connected to a rotating arm 61 on the cam-wheel shaft 43. As the plate 57 is moved inwardly the pin 22a is moved cotmterclockwise when it encounters the sloping surfaces 72, 73, so that the pick-up arm is swung outwardly to permit a new record to be dropped on to the turntable. As the plate 57 is returned outwardly, the pin 22a is moved clockwise by the sloping surface 78 to feed the pick-up to a position over the start of a record. The cam element 67 is mounted on rods 92 and is manually displaceable for 10-inch and 12-inch records by means of an upturned edge 98 on a sliding plate 96 moving on diagonal slots 100. A record-dispensing device 16 is provided in which an upper plate 23 unseats the lowermost record of the stack by means of an eccentric disc on the end of a rod 24 rotated by means of an arm 84, link 85 and a lever 82 pivoted at a point 83 and moved by a cam-wheel 86 mounted on an arm on the cam-wheel shaft 43. The record-dispensing device 16 is displaceable through an angle of approximately 180 degrees in order to accommodate 10-inch or 12-inch records and is coupled to the sliding plate 96 by a rod 95.
