Abstract

636,894. Testing balance of bodies. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., and SIMPSON, E. April 26, 1947, No. 11207. [Class 106 (ii)] An apparatus for testing the static balance of a circular body, e.g. a tyre, comprises a member 4, Fig. 1, horizontally supported at each end in bearings 5 and carrying a centring device 7 about which the body 28 is rotatable, a weighted arm 11 depending from the member 4 and normally maintaining the axis of device 7 vertical, and means for measuring angular movement of the member 4. In the form shown, the measuring means comprise a magnifying optical lever system operated by the arm 11. A rotatable concave mirror 13, Fig. 3, is attached to a member 14 rockably mounted on a bracket 16 so as to press at its upper end against the arm 11. Light from a lamp 18 is reflected from mirror 13 on to an adjustable plane mirror 20 and then on to a graduated scale (not shown). The weight 12, Fig. 1, is eccentrically mounted and slidable and rotatable on the arm 11 for adjustment so that the scale shows zero in the equilibrium position. The movement of the member 4 is damped by a dashpot 10. Specification 570,499 is referred to.
