Abstract
636,001. Moulding soil-seedling containers. MARECEK, F. Feb. 19, 1947, No. 4887. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Feb. 19, 1947] [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group 1] Portions of soil for raising seedlings are shaped and, after the seedlings have been planted, compressed to pyramidal shape by. apparatus comprising a base plate 3, a grid 1 and plungers 21 on carrier 2. Movement to the grid and carrier is imparted by a handle 4 driving a worm shaft 6 which turns threaded uprights 7 passing through flanged nuts 8 resting on the carrier 2. The nuts are also engaged by a bar 9 movable into three positions I, II, III, determining the engagement or otherwise of toothed depending rods 10 with the flange 1<SP>11</SP> on the grid 1. In operation the bar 9 is set with pawl 15 in notch III and by turning the handle 4 the grid 1 and elements 21 are raised leaving the base 3 clear to receive a layer of soil. The bar is moved to set the pawl 15 in notch II and the handle turned back to lower the grid 1 and elements 21 to an extent necessary to compress the soil to the required depth. By moving the bar 1 and pawl 15 to notch I the grid 1 is forced down to the base level 3. The grid is then lifted by movement of the handle 4 after pawl 15 has been reset in notch III, and the base 3 with the soil plugs removed for sowing with seed or planting with seedlings. After replacing the base 3 and plugs the soil is compressed around the seedlings by depression of the members 1, 21, the recesses 16 in the undersides of the members 21 preventing damage to the seedlings.
