Abstract
571,070. Seed germination. RAPLEY, A. W. Oct. 20, 1943, No. 17297, [Class 6 (ii)] [Also in Group V] Self-supporting casts for germinating seeds or propagating seedlings are produces by applying greater pressure in the region of the perimeter than in the centre. An annular retaining member 7 may be applied to one end of the mould 1 while a plunger 2 is forced in from the opposite end. Surplus soil above the level of the ring is brushed away or otherwise removed and the cast ejected after taking away the ring 7. Handles 3 are provided on the mould and the ring. The plunger 2 may be mounted on a base and the mould and ring pressed downward thereon. The pressure-free part of the end of the cast may be formed by a recess in the face of the plunger, the other end being closed completely, or such a recess may be provided to assist peripheral compression.
