Abstract
635,715. Voltmeters. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and REIK, H. April 18, 1947, No. 10384. [Class 37] In an A.C. voltmeter having a resistance R2 in series with a rectifier 1 and a moving coil instrument 8, the resistance R2 is shunted by a condenser C2, the value of which is such that for one particular value of voltage there is substantially no error in the reading of the voltmeter caused by the -variation in reactance with frequency of the portion of the self capacity of the rectifier 1 which shunts the instrument 8. The value of the condenser C2 is such that with a known resistance for the rectifier 1 at a chosen fraction of full scale deflection the product of the self-capacitance of the rectifier 1 and the sum of this known resistance and the resistance of the instrument 8 is substantially equal to the product of the capacitance of the condenser C2 and the resistance R2. A number of resistances R2, each shunted by its appropriate condenser C2, may be arranged so that they may be selectively connected to provide a number of different voltage ranges. The rectifier 1 consists of four dry-plate rectifying elements connected in a full wave bridge rectifier network. One diagonal 2, 3 is connected in series with the resistance R2 to a pair of terminals 6, 7 to which the alternating voltage to be measured is applied, the moving coil instrument 8 being connected across the other diagonal 4, 5.
