Abstract

635,626. Electric motors. VAUGHAN, R. C. May 12, 1947, Nos. 12760 and 16360, [Class 35] [Also in Group XXXVII] A small D.C. motor having a rotating cylindrical permanent magnet has a coreless stator winding surrounding the rotor and energized through a commutator to produce a rotating field. In one form (not shown) the stator winding is energized through a conventional segmental commutator arrangement, but in the preferred form shown, the windings are energized in turn by means of a series of crank-operated contacts. The magnet 11 is mounted on a shaft 12 having a cranked portion 26 and supported by bearings 13 in non-magnetic coil-supporting discs 17 spaced by an insulating drum 18. The three windings 14, 15, 16 wound on the stator are connected to three rods 20 which are secured to the stator frame 17 and support a contactcarrying plate 21. A spring contact strip 23 is secured to the projecting end of each rod 20 and is connected at 25 by a connecting-rod 24 to the crank 26. Pairs of stationary contacts 27, 28 are connected to each side of the supply and as the shaft rotates the windings are thus energized in alternate directions in correct sequence to produce a rotating field. In a modification, the motor may be surrounded by a magnetic cup which is mounted on and rotates with the rotor shaft. A model car powered by a motor according to the invention is described. It is stated that the rotor may be polished and the motor may run in a vacuum.
