Abstract

Sterols are obtained from oil concentrates containing sterols in excess of 5 per cent by treating the concentrate with up to, but not more than, 10 per cent by weight, based on the weight of said concentrate, of methyl alcohol, or ethylene glycol, and separating the precipitated sterols. Oils containing a high percentage, e.g. over 20 per cent, of sterols, may be warmed slightly and cooled to precipitate the sterols as a preliminary step to the process above. Detailed examples are given. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use of ethyl alcohol in place of methyl alcohol or ethylene glycol, and the use of any of these three compounds in an amount up to a weight equal to that of the oil concentrate. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
