[Class 39 (iii)] A closure for a charging opening 1 in one of the end walls of a rotary electric furnace comprises a wall of refractory material 2 having an opening for receiving an electrode or a resistance holder 6 and a further opening 3 for the relief of furnace vapours. The closure is mounted on a frame 10 axially displaceable from the charging opening. The electrode or resistance holder 6 is eccentrically mounted with respect to the furnace axis such that any portions of charge carried upwards by the rotation of the furnace, shall not fall upon the heating means. The furnace is suitable for melting metals under a protecting and purifying volatile salt bath.
