Abstract

The chromatographic adsorption apparatus described in Specification 585,224 for the separation and/or purification of substances is adapted for partition chromatography, the chromatographically active material consisting of a stationary liquid which is chromatographically active with respect to the materials to be treated and which is contained in and substantially saturates a solid carrier consisting of a substance that does not act as a chromatographically active adsorbent with respect to the materials to be treated. Specified carriers are silica, powdered paper and starch charged with, for example, water, as the stationary liquid. Thus, when silica is employed it may be saturated with water to form a silica gel.ALSO:The chromatographic adsorption process of Specification 585,224, [Group III], for the separation and/or purification of substances is adapted for partition chromatography, in, for example, the separation of acetylated amino acids; saturated volatile fatty acids; and sugars, from mixtures thereof in solution in chloroform. The chromatographically active material, consisting of a stationary liquid which is chromatographically active with respect to the materials to be treated and which is contained in and substantially saturates a solid carrier consisting of a substance that does not act as a chromatographically active adsorbent with respect to the materials to be treated. Specified carriers are silica, powdered paper and starch charged with, as the stationary liquid, water. Thus, when silica is employed, it may be saturated with water to form a silica gel.
