[Class 146 (i)] In a card index filing cabinet having trays stored nearly upright and adapted to be drawn out from and swung into a horizontal position on the top of the cabinet, a resilient toggle action buffer member is provided at the bottom of the compartment in which the trays are housed to act as a cushioning and ejector unit. A plurality of trays 42 are housed in holders 18 formed.by a plate section 19 with a bottom wall 20 and lateral flanges 21 which have flanges 22 parallel to the plate 19 and inturned lip portions 23 to form guides for the rear ends of the trays 42. Each holder is completed as a compartment by the plate 19 of the next compartment, the rearmost being completed by a compartment 12 providing a space for the top cover 58 of the cabinet and for a card receptacle 16 and tray 17. The compartments are maintained in inclined position by angled bars 24 having projections 25 engaging in slots in the bottom wall 4 of the cabinet, the tops of the compartments being located by bifurcated fingers 53 on retaining bars 50 which engage a plate 19 and flange 22 of the next compartment. The cushioning and ejector mechanism comprises a toggle lever 31 and a link 32 both of U cross-section pivotally connected by pins 33, the link 32 being pivotally connected by a pin 29 to the sides 28 of a plate detachably secured to the bottom 20 of the tray holder. The lower end of lever 31 carries rollers 36 on a pin 35, the pins 29 and 35 being connected by a coil spring 37 normally holding the toggle in broken position but in stretched position the coil being counterbalanced by the weight of the tray, and the upper arm 38 of the lever 31 carries a roller 40 and a cushion pad 41 adjacent the roller. Each tray 42, which has a finger grip at the top, is provided at the bottom with an axle 45 which engages the guide 21, 22, 23 or, when the tray is raised to the top, the flanged retaining bar 50 and with rollers 46 on the axle engaging the plates 19 or the tops of the other trays. Two plates 82 to hold correspondence are pivotally mounted in slots in a holder 77 attached to the cover 58. The cover 58 can be locked at 10 over the retainer bars 50 and trays 42.
