Abstract
Extracts from aromatic plants entirely soluble in hot water are prepared by subjecting a plant, or part thereof, to the passage of aqueous saturated steam so that the volatile elements are distilled and the water-soluble non-volatile elements are extracted, concentrating the solution containing the water-soluble non-volatile elements and reuniting the concentrated part with the volatile elements. The concentrate containing the water-soluble non-volatile elements may be mixed with a solid water-soluble physiologically inactive product such as lactose, saccharose, sorbose, sorbite or mannite before being reunited with the volatile elements so as to give either at once or after dessication a product in powdery, granular or paste form. The plants or parts thereof which may be treated include camomile flowers, clove flowers, elder flowers, anise seeds, coffee beans, cardamom flowers, caraway seeds, sweet-fennel seeds, vanilla pods or roots; garlic, calamus, galangale or ginger roots or rhizomes; bergamot, lemon, tangerine or orange peels; eucalyptus leaves, mat<\>ae, mint, tea, vervain, hyssop, marjoram, melitot and thyme. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the separation of the volatile elements by extraction with steam, condensation and separation, extraction with an organic solvent, enfleurage, distillation in a high vacuum and condensation by cold, or extraction with the help of a hot gas such as carbon dioxide and subsequent condensation by cold, separately forming the aqueous extract of the water-soluble non-volatile elements, concentrating the aqueous extract and uniting it with the volatile elements. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
