Abstract

Extracts from aromatic plants are prepared by subjecting the material to a distillation with the help of a hot gas or in a high vacuum, the distillate being condensed with the aid of cold, treating the residue of the distillation to form an aqueous extract of the elements soluble in water therefrom, concentrating the aqueous extract and reuniting the concentrate with the condensate. The concentrate before admixture with the condensate, may be incorporated with an inactive water-soluble product such as lactose, saccharose, sorbose, sorbite or mannite, to produce a powder either directly or after drying. According to an example, ground roasted coffee is heated to a temperature of 130-150 DEG C, distillation being effected by the application of a vacuum of 0.0001 mm. Hg or by the passage of a slow current of carbon dioxide and condensation being effected at a temperature of -25 DEG C. The coffee deprived of its volatile materials is extracted by a mixture of water and steam in a soxhlet-type apparatus, milk sugar is added and the mixture is converted into a powder. The powder is mixed with the condensate in a rotating drum. The final product may be in the form of powder, tablets, granules or paste, and may be used in the preparation of beverages and condiments. Other specified materials for treatment are camomile, clove and elder flowers; lime blossom; anise, cardamom, fennel or vanilla seeds; allium, calamus, galingale and ginger roots; bergamot, lemon and tangerine rinds; eucalyptus, laurel, mat<\>ae, mint, melissa, tea and vervain leaves; and hyssop, marjoram, melitot and thyme plants.
