Abstract

634,839. Bulldozers. LETOURNEAU, Inc., R. G. Feb. 11, 1948, No. 4054. Convention date, Feb. 11, 1947. [Class 68 (i)] In a bulldozer, the tractor chassis is mounted on two pairs of balloon-tyre road-wheels 5, 6 and carries at its rear an engine 11 supplying power to a transmission gear 16 of the constantmesh type including a plurality of control clutches 17. By means of bevel-gears 20 a transverse shaft 18 is driven, each end of the shaft having associated therewith one half of a steering clutch 21, the other half of which is on a shaft rotating in bearings 19 in the wall of a gear housing 3 extending longitudinally of the chassis. On this shaft is a gear-wheel 22 meshing with gear-wheels 24 that in turn mesh with gear-wheels 23 carried on shafts 8 projecting through the housing and having mounted thereon the balloon-tyre road-wheels. The pack arms 30 of the blade 29 extend rearwards on the outside portion of a T-shaped bracket 31 which is pivotally secured to the chassis, the bracket being capable of adjustment about an axis longitudinally of the chassis so as to permit angling of the blade. This adjustment is effected by a rod 34 pivotally secured to the T-bracket and passing through a lug 36 on the engine frame, the rod being threaded at the end and provided with an adjustment nut 37. Vertical adjustment of the blade is effected by a rope 42 dead-ended on the chassis and passing to-and-fro between multiple sheaves 43 on the back of the blade, thence over direction-changing sheaves 40, 47 on the chassis to a capstan 48 driven from the transmission gear through a clutch. To increase the sharpness of turn, disconnection of a steering clutch causes automatic application of the brakes to the wheels on the same side of the vehicle.
