Abstract

634,722. Luminescent screens. PHILIPS LAMPS Ltd. Jan. 23, 1947, No. 2155. Convention date, Jan. 11, 1944. Drawings to Specification. [Class 39 (i)] A luminescent screen comprises rod-shaped luminescent crystals deposited substantially parallel to each other with their long dimension approximately normal to the surface of the support. Crystals of magnesium tungstate (long prisms) are suspended in benzene or toluol between two horizontal metal plates 3 mms. apart between which is a voltage of 1500 v. in the direction of gravity, the crystals depositing on the lower electrode which may carry a removable substratum layer of insulating material. One or both electrodes may be located outside the liquid. The substratum or support may be transparent, e.g. or opaque and reflecting, e.g. metal for C.R. tubes and glazed paper or cardboard for X-ray purposes. The crystals are secured by binders, e.g. nitrocellulose or ethyl cellulose, the suspending medium being vaporized by heating.
