634,261. Machines for making cables. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., PHEAZEY, J. R., and DEACON, H. J. Nov. 21, 1947, No. 30931. [Class 109] [Also in Group XXXVI] A machine for twisting two pairs of electric conductors for making two separate cables and which can be used for twisting four conductors to make a single cable comprises a flier 1 rotating about a stationary axle 7 which supports four rotatable reels 21 . . . 24. Wires 31, 32 are led off from two of the reels and passed over guide pegs 27, 28 and through a slot 33 in the axle 7 and a bore 34 in the trunnion 9. The two wires are then taken over pulleys 35, 36, 37, 38 rotatably mounted on the flier rotation of which twists the wires into a single pair 39 which is led out through a bore 40 to a take-up reel. Wires 42, 43 are simultaneously drawn from the remaining reels and passed over pegs 29, 30, through a slot 44 in the axle 7 and a bore 45 in trunnion 8. From this point the wires pass over pulleys 46, 47, 48, 49 and are led out at the end 50 of the machine. By replacing the single wires on the reels by pairs multiple twin quads may be made. To make a single spiral quad all four wires are drawn in the same direction from the reels, two additional pegs being provided on the member 25 for the wires drawn from the reels 22, 23. The four wires are drawn through a lay plate on the trunnion 9 and are passed over all the pulleys on the flier and out at the end 50 of the machine. To keep the axle stationary as the flier rotates the axle is pivoted in trunnions 8, 9 in blocks 10, 11 fixed to the flier. A shaft 12 is mounted in block 10 and a block 13 also fixed to the flier, the shaft carrying pulleys 14, 15 at its ends. Two other pulleys 16, 17 are carried by the upright 3 and axle 7 respectively. Belts 18, 19 pass round the pulleys as shown. Instead of this arrangement a planetary gearing may be used.
